Vatican to Install Webcam at St. Peter’s Tomb for Virtual Pilgrimages

In an effort to connect with Catholics worldwide ahead of the 2025 Jubilee, the Vatican is installing a webcam at St. Peter’s tomb, allowing believers to virtually visit one of the Church’s holiest sites.

The installation, set for December 2nd, is part of the Vatican’s broader plan to use technology to reach more people during the lead-up to the Jubilee. The camera will be positioned beneath the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica, providing live footage of the tomb of St. Peter, the Church’s first pope.

A second webcam will focus on the Holy Door of the basilica, which is traditionally opened only during Jubilee years. Pilgrims who pass through this door receive blessings, symbolizing the forgiveness of sins—a central part of the Jubilee celebration.

The Vatican has described the webcam initiative as offering “symbolic access” to those unable to make the journey to Rome in person, as reported by the Associated Press.

The Jubilee, which occurs every 25 years, is expected to draw 32 million pilgrims to the Eternal City. Pope Francis will officially open the Holy Door on Christmas Eve with a special Mass in St. Peter’s Square.

In addition to the webcams, the Vatican will launch a new magazine for the Holy Year, which will feature a section where Pope Francis answers questions from readers.

These steps are part of the Vatican’s ongoing efforts to make the sacred events of the Jubilee more accessible to Catholics around the globe.
